I joined Operation Smile in 2013 as a Cleft Surgeon. Since then, I have done 10 missions with the initiative.
There is a very good reason that I enjoy and continue to do volunteer work for this organisation. There are people from different cultures and backgrounds who enter Operation Smile as volunteers. They bring their unique insights, perspectives and expertise to the table, and all of them share a common selfless goal – to bring a healthy and acceptable life to everyone in need.
It’s in the midst of working towards this common selfless goal that you get the chance to work with some amazing people and experience some amazing times that can’t be repeated in words and have to be felt to be understood.
However, the real motivation for my volunteer work with Operation Smile is because of the transformation in a patient. The only thing more rewarding than seeing a child with a new smile and confidence, is the glimmer of elation and hope in the parents eyes when they first set sights on them after surgery.
This organisation is one of the best in the field, and signing up to be a volunteer for them is a proud move to make.
